Finding jobs hard?

Hi guys, sorry this will be long.
I did my BSc Biomedical Science back in 2013 obtained a 2:1 ( at the time, the uni's did not have the 4 year one, where you work for a year or gain a porfolio), I worked as a MLA for a short period until I became really sick and was referred to an adminstration job at the same hospital and worked there for a year.
Then in September 2016 I did my MSc Biomedical Science, only obtained a Pass.

I was hoping maybe getting a Master's it would give me more of an opportunity on getting jobs, I have been applying for MLA, Admins and etc.
However, I am not being hired.

I am also looking at Research Assistant but most require experience and a PhD .

I tried applying for studentship in Cardiovascular Medicine, but also got rejected for all of them :frown: So it hasn't been great for me.

Anyone else, having trouble with career with a BSc and MSc Biomedical degree?? This is really upsetting me.

Hiya, I cannot share your frustrations enough. I started off doing biomed, so have done relevant biomed credits, and then finished up with a degree in tropical diseases by transferring into that for my third year. I have only done the BSc but my god. I can't even get the most rudimentary of jobs, where NVQs are being asked for instead of degrees. My degree is about as useful as a chocolate teapot- not good enough for lots of places, or too good to the extent places would rather have an NVQ. My biomed from Liverpool was not accredited/there was no placement option (most russel group biomed degrees dont have that option anyway), and so I don't have experience for what the lab based jobs required.

Seems that need experience to get job
need job to get experience
STUCK.

Honestly would take an admin job at this moment in time, I'm 21 and have not a single day of employment gap since the age of 16. And places I'm far too overqualified still turn their noses up at me.

I’ve been hearing a lot of people getting specialised jobs with Bsc’s in Biomedicine which is why it was a big turn off for me. I think you should just take up any job you can find and try gaining as much experience as possible (better if you can work in a field you are interested in or want to pursue). If you get lucky and interviewed, mention the experience you gained. You cant simply expect to be a top dog straight after earning your degree. Good luck, keep applying, you might just get lucky

Hi  I'm sorry that you have been struggling too!! It's ridiculus with the experience thing. It's like, hire and train me and then I will have and learn the experience.
I recently had a interview for Chemo therapy admin assistant, I was rejected as someone else had more experience in that department and stronger application.
That interview was horrible as I felt I was being judged... the moment I said I had learning disabilities, the women was like.. oh but you did a masters so it couldn't have been that hard! .... I was like with great difficulty I did that. ...
The MLA jobs I have applied for never responded back to me. ... I'm 27 . this feels horrible :frown: I am limited to what types of jobs I apply to also due to health.
And yes! most places require NVQs!!

Its ridiculous, and nowhere just hands out the experience they're wanting. Like we're trying to be ADMIN ASSISTANTS and we have spent 3/4 years at uni. Sorry you had such a naff experience- I honestly would complain. Not because you want the position, but because that is simply discriminatory, it is truly unprofessional to bring that up at interview; particularly in that manner. The most depressing thing is I'm not even getting to the interview stage. Which is absurd, its not because of my cover letters etc it's simply because NVQs are preferred, or they have 'apprentice' secretary offers. I've been a medical secretary for three years alongside being a FT student. I even applied for a job the other day that had '1 year of homelessness' as a job requirement. I probably will be homeless soon on account of not getting a job so maybe there's a box I can tick after all..

EDIT: feel you dodged a bullet, what judgemental people to be working for.

Hi, I don't expect to be a top dog straight away. I have been working in a restaurant on and off since I was 16. ... After my BSc, I worked continued working in a restaurant for a year. Then I worked as an MLA, but that only lasted for 5 months due to a long term medical condition, thus I had to be referred to an administration assistant role which I was fine with, it was good my health, staff was friendly and etc and was still with the NHS. .... after working there for a year I did my Master's degree ( I can't do both work or education at the same also due to medical condition). ... and I got pass. ..... Now I am trying to get back into work. I applied for an admin role but got rejected. I am also very limited on what types of jobs I can apply for due to health reasons. ... I am 27 now. But yes, I am applying for jobs to gain any type of experience... let's see what happens.

Hopefully you land a job.
Im sorry to hear your health condition is holding you back.
The job market here works by supply and demand. Unfortunately this means that not all degrees will lead to good job security.
I hope you land a job soon though, good luck.

I hope you don't end up become homeless and I hope there is something for you! Yeah, they also discriminated me in regards to my medical condition too! It was awful. I wasn't upset about not getting the job, I was upset about the way I was treated. .... They clearly broke the NHS guidelines and Policy in regards to Discrimination! You are right, I dodged a bullet on that one. Yes, I have realised a lot of places also look at apprenticeship. I would happily apply for one, if I was allowed too! Yeah some jobs haven't even responded back. I have applied for 999 call handler and 111 job too. Let's see how that goes!

Have you both tried using Recruitment agencies instead? Try using job board like CV Library, LinkedIn, Monster etc and just put up your CV's for companies to openly look at.

You might have a bit of luck doing it that way as opposed to searching for jobs specifically and then doing long application forms etc.

I did for a bit but I can't tell you how many calls I exclusively got asking me to be a healthcare assistant (which I already do), just PRAYING for a nice, minimum wage paying, office job rather than a second more in retail or hospitality!

Sorry my humours a bit dry, I luckily have the support of my parents and a 0 hour contract job so it wont come to that! The job market is just a bit pants, I spent like two hours for a police handler job, I had to do an online test that took ages and was compromised of lots of things only for the site to crash like 95% of the way through and I honestly just gave up! Good luck with it!!

Yes but remember beggars can't be choosers. Take any job that is somewhat relevant to your area of expertise even if the pay check is not that good, it gives you a platform to move on to better opportunities with relevant experience on your CV.

I would also recommend finding very small companies in your area and sending in your CV + Cover Letter to them (even better if you can actually go in person). This job market just requires a bit of patience and thinking outside the box a bit. Good luck!

Great. Click-apply to opportunities on those job boards once you've uploaded your CV, you can do plenty of applications in a week and it's less stressful.

Don't worry so much about the health aspect in the beginning, just apply to any and everything related to the role that you want. Once you make it to the interview stages then you can tell them about your health (but don't make it sound like you can be seriously ill again otherwise this might put them off hiring you). Good Luck!
