Difficult to know exactly how a specialist interview for Dental Nurse will go as it is - well, very specialist! However, I reckon you can expect them to ask you about techniques, especially ones relating to the Nurse rather than the Dentist, so a check of your technical knowledge and how you apply it. Something like 'What do you think of the new advice on the Wilkinson technique for calming fearful patients?'. They are likely to be opinion based questions rather than something like 'Name the chemical composition of a 2.4 ratio general amalgum' (Can you tell I'm not a Dentist yet?)

They might also ask a few questions about the hierarchy in the surgery, ensure that you are confident enough to speak out if you think there is a problem even though the Dentist is an Officer. Also that you are comfortable and confident dealing with patients of all ranks.

They may also ask about deployed operations, working from field units to see if you could cope with working in far from perfect conditions.

In the main it is likely to be looking to see if you have considered the differences between being a Dental Nurse in a surgery in Bradford and one in Basra, and will be assessing your answers to see that you could cope.

Why have you applied for Dental Nursing and not Adult Nursing?

Anyway...
Do you really know what Dental Nursing is? Issues in the speciality...have you researched them? Visited a practice and 'volunteered'?...spent time with Dental Nurses? When they ask you what you know and understand of the role there is little more convincing than actually having seen/done/been around the people doing it. Have an opinion about 'Military' concerns around Dental Nursing, but don't get too hung up about deployed aspects....they are unlikely to expect you to have volunteered to go out and visit a deployed practice!

Think on.

Hi there

I'm a 27 year old newly qualified male nurse. I've just begun the process of applying for a staff nurse position in the Raf.

Are there any other nurses applying at this moment in time, wishing to work together towards the run up of specialist interview?

Also i'd like to get an indication as to how specific the questions are related to current issues regarding the raf. For example must we debate or provide strong evidence for your opinion on such particular issues.

I'd be interested in getting in contact with here2chatRAF as i'm also in your neck of the woods. Please reply!

Thanks

Rendell

Hey  I know this post is from a fair few years ago but just wanted to contact you guys from the original post and see if you guys would be able to tell me more about RAF nursing and the application process, especially the interviews and presentations. I have currently just started my second year of Adult Nursing and will be looking to either apply in my third year or in the first year of post registration. Can anyone tell me why they chose the Registered adult nurse route instead of the officer training or the other way around. Really curious to know other people's decisions and reasoning as I really can't decide what to do. I have been to university before my nursing degree so its not like im only recently finished from school but just wondered in any case
