Educational Psychology Doctorate 2018 - International Student

Hi,

I am considering applying for a doctorate in educational psychology this year, but I'm not entirely sure if my experience level would suffice, because I just about meet the requirements and have heard about the competition to get on.

I have a double bachelors degree (part of a 4-year joint program) in Psychology which is approved by the BPS.
I interned at 2 mental hospitals assisting clinical psychologists, the first for a month working mostly with adults and some children, and the second for less than a month working with children only.
I have interned at a special needs school for 1 month as a Teacher Assistant and Counselor.
I am currently working as a full-time Primary School Counselor at an international school and would have completed 1 year at the time of application.
I have also been a part time Psychology tutor to high school students for about 1.5 years.

I am wondering if it would be realistic to apply at this point or should I wait until next year. Also, does having a master's degree greatly improve your chances?
Also, I know the training is mostly for UK students, so if anyone could share information about international students' places on the course that would be very helpful.

Thank you!

Hi - sorry you haven't had a response to this yet. I'm just going to bump the thread in the hope that someone sees this and can help :h:

This is not my area of expertise but @Interrobang may be able to help. If you just meet the entry requirements it is better to wait. The masters degree will add to your application so it's definitely worth considering. For an international student funding is the main problem. Having said all that there's nothing to stop you from applying again next year if you don't succeed this year.
The applications to start in September 2018 have already closed (they closed in December). Having just one year of experience is risky, although there are some unis that might accept that (you would have to check). For the number of years, afaik only full-time paid work counts (but of course other experience is helpful too). Not sure about the international student aspect tho I'm afraid
Hi,

It is competitive, but you can always apply and use the feedback to strengthen your application the previous year. The main thing is to stay resilient, because there may be more than 1 rejections, but each time you apply you'll be stronger. The main reasons for using a Master's to boost your application would be if your first degree was a 2:ii or below, or if the Master's was more specialist, allowing you to learn more and increase your job opportunities too. The AEP are now in charge of applications and they have a guidebook which answers most questions. There are places for international students, but there are requirements, such as a high IELTS score.

Good luck!
