If I apply to unis for medicine as my 5th option could I choose biomedical science just in case I don't get into medicine? But does that mean that my UCAS application cant be aimed at medicine?

Healthcare related courses such as biomed and biochemistry are frequent 5th choices for Medicine applicants. A medicine focused personal statement won’t stop you getting offers for those courses.

You aim your application squarely at medicine. Courses such as biomedical science are well used to reading personal statements focused on medicine because of the four-course limit.

Biomedical science is a common choice for people otherwise applying for medicine. Admissions departments for biomed are therefore more than used to seeing personal statements that are clearly more targeted at medicine. If medicine is what you want; aim everything on your UCAS application for that.

You absolutely can! Write your personal statement as if you are applying to medicine as biomedical courses are used to being lots of peoples fifth option. A lot don't read the personal statement and you may be invited to an interview so you can talk about it then

If you aim your application (reference and personal statement) towards medicine you can only apply for 4 medicine courses and 1 other course which is usually biomedical science.
All biomedical science departments know this and are willing to accept applicants who are applying for medicine into biomedical science.
Note that this does not work the other way, if you send a biomedical science ps to a medical school, your application will be thrown out.
