How important are references?

Hi lads.

I've just applied to uni as an individual- I left school a year ago. One of my old teachers agreed to give me a reference but for whatever reason didn't submit it today and I couldn't get in touch with them. Thought I might as well just apply without a reference so I sent it away anyway. I'm assuming all Unis will most likely just reject me straight away due to a lack of reference?

I would ring UCAS and ask for advice. They might let the universities know that you plan to send a reference at a later stage.
