That is a good question :beard:

In this case I'm thinking of jobs like social work, teaching, police force, prison service, etc.

I'm currently working for my local government and I would say that there are benefits to working in the public sector.

Good

- Job security
- Annual leave days
- Flexibility
- Career
- Experience

Bad
- Low pay
- Low job satisfaction
- Bureaucratic environment
- Lack of diversity

I'll be going to work in the Fast Stream in September. Worked in the Scottish Government over the summer and I found it so rewarding.

I guess I enjoyed the fact that my work affected policy, which affects education policy in Scotland. I like the thought of being able to aid in making change.

Okay I'll answer the OP question

I have never worked in the public sector but to me the benefits seem to be around working for the good of society rather than just maxmising your boss' profit. I hate capitalist power relations and organisations like the NHS are the closes thing we have to socialism. If I am gonna be a cog in the machines I would rather be treating poeple with cancer free at the point of use as apposed to working for some organisation who's aim is to fleece the NHS for all it can get. I used to want to be a medical physicist and work for the NHS involved in radiography before I had a really big depression inducing reality check on what I am capable of and what society will give me the chance to do

I'm working at HM Treasury and i'm really enjoying it. The public sector in my opinion is better than the private sector for obvious reasons such as work-life balance, pension and job security.

Why/why not?

Yes, definitely its worthwhile working in Public sector. Public Sector jobs give you bigger exposer. It also helps you to explore your talents through various avenues. Most importantly it come with a number of challenges and encourages you to fight each of them. Facing challenges not only will help you to excel your career graph but will also help you todevelop and manage leadership skills.
To work with Public sector it is important to develop your leadership skill, understand the psyche of the people you are working with and each day motivate yourself to give your best at your work place. On the other hand at times you may have the insecurity of loosing your job. However, if you are hardworking and putting your 100% you can definitely cross those hurdle and establish a better position at your work place.

What do you find attractive about working in the public sector?

Point of interest/motivation is very individualistic, but one common thing that I think is pretty attractive is the glamor and lucrative salary.

What puts you off working in these kinds of jobs?
There are many reason that may put you off from these jobs.. Few common factors can be:
Work pressure
Work environment
Work Culture
Your Health condition
Office Politics
Co-Workers
Unstable organization and many more....

It's working for society and the general public; as if you are important to them in some ways.

But the disadvantage(s) of it is how the public treat you for example in the police force, (using as an example because it's the brother-in-law's profession); you'll come across a majority of aggressive people especially when they are under the influence of alcohol and the misuse of drugs.
It's also practically the same when working in the social care sector, especially when being a Social Worker such as abiding with government frameworks of protecting children. If these rules aren't followed, then you're out.

I agree, after experience both public and private sector (despite the pay difference). I do prefer public sector.

Personally, I'd only be interested in the "cool" roles within the civil service.. given the discrepancy in pay for similarly competitive private sector jobs.

As a grad, things like working at GCHQ in one of their cryptography or analytics roles, working for MI5/MI6, the FCO as a diplomat and being a policy analyst sound the most interesting. If you're into teaching, TeachFirst is a great springboard into either teaching or any number of high level private sector jobs.

Alternatively, the route of building a strong private sector career then being tapped as an MP or an ambassador or some sort of cabinet office or leader within a segment (e.g. universities, DWP etc).
