Grow up. I didn't SAY you think it's fantastic because you go there. But you were obviously going to say Warwick is rubbish in comparison, considering you're a student there.

Not at all - if you found my posts on this forum before I started at Bristol, you'll find that I said exactly the same thing - Warwick is a horrible, miserable little cesspit. I couldn't believe how horrible it was there on the open day.

I don't give a toss if it got voted 'the best campus' in England, that's rather like being the best singer in the Spice Girls. Campus universities are, by and large, pretty crap. One wouldn't generally choose to live in a concrete jungle in the middle of nowhere at any other stage of life, so why choose to do so for university, supposedly the most exciting years of your life?
hey, leave the spice girls out of this! *fondly remembers her youth*

To be honest, whether you choose Bristol or Warwick will depend on the type of thing you're looking for; if you would prefer to live within a campus where all the amenities are on hand, and most of your nightlife will revolve around your student union (not saying this in a pejorative sense, just saying), and which might be said to be safer, then go to Warwick. If you want a city university, where the accommodation and faculties are more spread out, but where there's much more nightlife and things to do without having to travel into the nearest city, then Bristol might be better for you.

I did visit warwick for the open day, and I have to say, i was rather unimpressed by the accommodation, and when our tour guide student said 'it's great; you can't go anywhere without seeing someone you know', I was instantly put off and wondered why that was said to be a good thing, but again, others may find this appealing.

As I drove through coventry on the way home, my dad (quite rightly) pronounced it a ****hole, and I think that was the final nail in the coffin.

I originally wanted to go to Warwick, then I came to bristol and was totally won over. Enough said. Warwick campus is sexy but once you have been in all the little shops on campus the town around it is boring as hell.

I was not 'wrong' about Warwick's accommodation being better than Bristol's. My opnion cannot be 'wrong', it's my opinion. As I said, Bristol was distinctly dusty and unkempt from what I saw.

Warwick has always been higher than Bristol for maths. I didn't say overall, did I? Overall, they're close.
But a specialist employer is going to know that Warwick is a much better university for maths and economics than Bristol, consistently

Oxford doesn't have parking facilities, nor does Cambridge, I believe. Many unis don't. I said UNIVERSITY parking, not public.
Stop being an idiot and trying to pick holes in what I'm saying.

You presented your opinion as fact. That's wrong. And what, precisely, did you see that was 'dusty and unkempt'? Would you care to be a little more specific? Are you saying the accommodation office need to hire more cleaners? Or are you just making unspecific mutterings?

Warwick has not 'always been higher than Bristol for maths', evidently, since Warwick is a much younger university. However, even if I concede to your statement that Warwick is a 'much, much better university for maths and economics' (and really, you're overexaggerating that difference big time) I still maintain that a graduate employer will not care when it's between Bristol and Warwick. They're in the same league. What exam marks the individual applicant has is what will really matter. Take it from someone with more experience than you.

Oxford and Cambridge aren't really relevant, seeing as the OP is trying to choose between Warwick and Bristol, both of which have parking facilities. I can't really see why this is an issue anyway, since we don't even know whether the OP has a car. However, if you're going to insist on making an issue of it (which I find quite amusing, since if parking facilities are on your list of approximately three good things you have to say about Warwick, you're clearly scraping the barrel) I genuinely don't believe that there is a single university in the country without a single student car park.

I applied to both, Warwick rejected me but I was going to pick Bristol anyway - much prefer the City/University (and apparant social/nightlife) in comparison to Warwick which seemed boring and the less said about Coventry the better.

Academically though, especially for a Maths based Economics course - Warwick would probably suit you a lot better, it's reputation is slightly superior but to be honest both are top class Unis.

I'm in roughly the same position as the OP, I've been accepted for Maths and Computer Science courses at both Warwick and Bristol and am having to decide between the two which I'm finding pretty difficult. My ideas on how to choose are:
- Are the offers the same? Is one set of grades more realistic than the other?
- What exactly do the two courses entail?
- What does it feel like being there? Try visiting both on a normal day rather than an open day, just wander round & try to get a feel for them.
But at the end of the day it's one of those decisions that's so difficult that in the end it desn't much matter which you go for.
See you there?!

If you would like to know anything about CS@Bristol feel free to PM me with any concerns. Or see my huge CS thread also on this forum  Have you come to an open day yet?

Personally I HATED Warwick when I went to visit.. didn't like the campus... didn't like the look of the accomodation.. didn't like the fact it seemed to be in the middle of nowhere.

so out of the two I'd say Bristol. But that's personal opinion.. you'd have to go visit really coz Warwick is like marmite.. you either love it or hate it.

Well, I could have some words to say:

-Warwick: NICE and huge campus as I can say, it's like a small city inside an university where you could go and do things you want... e.g: Bank, Pub, Sports..... And the department builidings is way too impressive, modern( which I like) and well-orgranised..... But, honestly, I feel so depress after returning from the Warwick Open day, because I'm sick of the traffic(which really scares me off) and the isolation of the university with the city.... Actually, Coventry is not a big city and it is boring in some ways !

-Bristol: WOA, Big City, Nice University and too many churches... Both old and modern parts including in the city. I'm so impressed when going to Bristol. But it seems like lack of food shops as I can only find a Subway and a Pizza Hut round the university. I had tried to look for Mc or KFC or Burger King but there's nothing.... That makes me exhausted of hungry on the way back home.

Academically, Bristol ranked 8th while Warwick ranked 7th in the Times Online, so it's not really big a deal. Things can change few years later and most of all, Warwick is a new uni comparing with Oxbridge, Bristol so there's nothing to make sure that it won't become less strong an uni in some years later.

My God, what a terrible point.

But Bristol is full of food shops! And Burger King etc make me feel pretty disgusting after eating... Much rather go to Beijing Bistro (at the top of Park Street), Boston Tea Party (also Park Street) or one of the many studenty eats type places around there. Most of them aren't in the middle of the Uni but they're not exactly far, and the exercise is good for you...
I went to Warwick open day & am still undecided about where I want to go. I'm sort of leaning in the Bristol direction, I loved their CS department but don't know what the Maths is like.
One thing I'm worried about with Bristol is the accomodation: Is it miles away? Is it expensive? Is it nice? Do I get a guarenteed place in Uni halls in first year etc? If it is miles away can I get a bus pass cheaply? (I'm guessing cycling around Bristol isn't much fun) Will I get moved down the priority lists because I live only an hour away?
Can anyone help here?
Thanks

Post in the accomm thread for a better response but:
The furthest hall would be about a 35 min walk, but it's a nice walk and lots of people do it quite happily. Bristol is a fairly expensive city and this is reflected in accomm prices, but nothing I'd call extortionate. There's also a good range of prices for accommodation, some halls/rooms are cheaper than others. First years who FIRM Bristol are guarenteed a place, providing they don't have certain BS postcodes (check website). Even then though I know people who were able to get a room after term started whose parents live in Bristol.

Actually, the accomodation at Warwick Uni is even more expensive than at Bristol at some halls, my friends live in a non-catered, non-ensuite hall which is not the most expensive and he needs to pay about 90.00 per week.

For those who face this problem: try Google Earth  You can use the measure tool to calculate the exact distance from your hall/department to any restaurants.

Hurrah for my non-BS postcode!
I went to Warwick last week and although I liked it a bit more than I thought I would I wasn't particularly impressed by the idea of a Maths with Computing course which has nothing to do with the CS dept. And nothing I saw made me think "ooh I want to come here" like Bristol did, so I think my decision is made
Now I need to choose my insurance choice *goes to look for a Birmingham vs. Sheffield thread*
Thanks for the advice everyone and I hope the OP ends up somewhere he/she (can't remember) loves!

What's wrong with not having the non BS postcode? Is it because of the local bursary they give? I get it because I have a BA postcode wihich means an extra £1020 a year for just coming from Bath, its sweet.

People with BS postcodes don't get the accommodation guarantee, I believe.
