To what extent was the black panther party's use of guns justified?

Justified:
protection against police brutality
made people feel protected by the panthers
exercising their right to bear arms

Not justified:
frightened/intimidated people, including black people
got into shootouts with police regularly, killing both police & panthers - I think there was a panther killed who was only about 16
some could argue it damaged the fight for equal rights - made it easier for racists to see black people as dangerous or uncivilised and not deserving of rights, where as NVDP made it easier for people to sympathise - BUT another take on this is that NVDP hadn’t achieved much de facto change, whereas the panthers did
