This is by definition applied maths, not pure maths...?

I assume by "pure maths" you mean "A-level core maths" (or equivalent), in which case there are many things you can do. For starters, pretty much any physical process you care to think of can be modelled with calculus, although the difficulty and scope of that modelling may vary...
