Er yeah, THAT'S what it is :/
Hope you don't mind me reactivating this thread, but as it's now the start of a new academic year, would be good to hear from anyone on here who's expecting to be in Wantage Hall from September.

Thanks for reminding me Marcus, I need to get in touch with Wantage and ask about joining the Wantage Hall Society! I hope I'd be allowed to join, despite only being at Reading (and therefore Wantage) for only one year. I'd love to go back for their annual formal dinner in the spring! It'll make me incredibly nostalgic, though, I can just tell.. :frown:

While I'm at it I think I might email the Warden and ask whether he could update me on what's going on regarding the after-effects of the Halls Review, abolishing formals etc.
Wantage is my first choice for accomodation! Hopefully I like it. Can anyone tell me what sort of food they serve? I'm quite picky and like my food plain...too many flavours/veggies and I'm put off.

Well, most of it'll certainly be plain! Usually they have three options, two non vegetarian, one of which is usually crappy and the other one always runs out first. Vegetarian option is generally quite good, sometimes something like macaroni cheese, but they'll often not serve that to you unless you've told the hall you're vegetarian when you start.

Oh yeah, and it's been a while and I doubt if Doreen's still there, but if she is, watch out for her. Oh yeah, and bring your hall card to all meals. Even if you've been going to all meals all year beforehand and you don't have it if you're asked for it you won't be served and you'll have to go back and fetch it.

Also on the queue up to the dining hall, you'll be able to see the signatures of students who attended landmark formal dinners. Look out for mine on the 90th founders formal dinner one near the bottom corner, and there's another one that happened in 2000, but not sure which dinner that was!

Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask, know quite about the place, having been there for three years.

Marcus

May have changed since I was there, but I'll give the advice anyways. Technically you are not allowed to smoke in your rooms, but people do it anyways. You can smoke outside, or in The Baa. And also due to tradition, the only time you can smoke in the dining hall is during formals, after the warden says "You may now smoke".

Which is after the loyal toast...

Marcus, are you a member of the Wantage Society?

No, but I suppose I should be, after my contributions to Wantage Hall. Haven't got around to joining. Did you join?

Not yet, but there again I only thought of doing so the other day. If I'd done all three years at Reading then I would have joined straight after graduation, but after two years at Royal Holloway I forgot about it. Odd really, because I've never forgotten Wantage Hall and my fab time there back as a fresher.
Yeah, well the next dinner's going to be in March. Might go next time even though it'll cost me membership plus £50 for the dinner and B&B accomodation, as I know some people I knew went this year. None of my mates though, perhaps will be better next year.

I forgot to say before, but look out for my signature on the 95th! If they've got round to putting it up yet...

I think nowadays membership is free...
Im going to be in Wantage from october this year and I as just wondering if anyone could enlighten me to what the halls review that ppl are talking about actually changes. There still will be formal things right? cos i bought a dress!!!

Thanks to anyone who replies
Yeah, I think there'll still be formals. In the first term you'll have Freshers, Founders and Christmas. Guys have it easy as they can wear the same suit/tux throughout, but most girls like to buy a new dress for each - well, my girlfriend did anyways, and they were all £100+!

I'm afraid I don't have a pic on the computer at the moment, but I have lots of photos. I'll see about scanning some in - I took quite a few at formals.

Well, over a year later I've finally got round to scanning in some Wantage pics!

Their titles are self-explanatory, though I'll just add that in the Burns' Night picture the Warden is in the process of giving the Address to the Lassies...
Is anyone staying in Wantage atm? I'm a temp in Wells but I eat in Wantage...
Anyone still using this thread. I was searching for memories of my days at wantage and bumped into this thread. Like to see eevryone has fond memories of the place as it was by far the best of the halls. I used to work at the Baa, before and after the revamp, with Alex Cheeseman and the lot. Pity I havent been in contact with anyone from there. ..

Do you have any particularly good memories of Wantage you could share?

Also, out of interest, which year(s) were you there? Probably before my time as I don't remember there being a Baa revamp when I was there.
