The Irish Prime Minister has vowed to campaign and step in for more liberal laws in the Republic of Ireland in terms of abortion and equal rights.

According to UK Reuters "Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Saturday that he would campaign for a liberalisation of the country’s restrictive abortion laws ahead of a referendum in the coming months, adding that his views on the issue had evolved."

The Republic of Ireland isn't very well known for being progressive and liberal with gay marriage only being legalised in 2015 and heavy restrictions on abortion and not enough laws to encourage equal rights.

Finally the Irish Prime minster has stepped in. A country once dominated by right wing Catholics is taking a step forward.

Surely it is time for all countries to follow Ireland's example?

Ireland's definitely changing, and I suspect quite a lot of young people are taking liberal values from the UK - which is obviously nearby and is culturally influential. I'd argue of course that bundling together a group of disparate views and labelling them "progressive" is a bit daft through. You can, for example, believe strongly in same-sex marriage, but have deep moral problems with abortion. The two aren't really related.

Only 2 years later than Great Britain did mind.

All of the ROI allows gay marriage, you realise not all of the UK still does don't you?

Britain had had civil partnerships for over a decade before Ireland legalised same sex marriage (and ireland had no such things as civil partnerships afaik before they legalised same sex marriage). Just pointing it out because it is worth noting that civil partnerships have existed in the UK for a long time and they DID offer near identical legal rights for same sex couples as for married couples.
