Computer science at RHUL or QMUL?

Hi ! I have applied for 5 unis and got offer from 3 of them. The three choices are:

Queen Mary - Science & Engineering Foundation Programme (Computer Science 4 Year) (GGX4)

Royal Holloway - Computer Science (Software Engineering) with a Year-in-Industry G462

Brunel - Computer Science (Software Engineering) with Professional Practice G602

Brunel and Royal Holloway gave me an offer to study the original courses I have applied for, while Queen Mary gave me the course mentioned above as an alternative to the original one I have applied for: Software Engineering for Business with Industrial Experience (I1N1).

I would like an advice and ask: Should I do a 4 year course at RHUL or do a foundation year at QMUL and then do a CS course at this uni? Which one do you think it is better for CS and will have more opportunities when graduate?

Thanks!

Hello.

So I would say that in terms of getting a job after uni is more about doing a strong placement and getting good experience, rather than doing well academically. Say there are 2 identical twins applying for a job at Microsoft:

One has a 1st from QMUL in CS, but no work experience and has no portfolio of extracurricular projects.

The other has a 2:1 from RHUL, has done a year placement with Microsoft where they did quite well, learned a lot, got a good recommendation from their manager and they have also written a video game in their spare time using the C# skills they learned at Microsoft.

Now, who sounds like the stronger candidate? I'll give you a hint: It's not the first person lol! In the above situation, you could switch the universities and the 2nd candidate is still the strongest.

University reputation doesn't matter anywhere near as much as Universities would have you believe. Most employers, especially in tech, don't even care where you got your degree. It's more about what you can do.

If it were me, and I wanted to go in to industry, I'd go with the Uni that is offering me the best placement opportunities.

Hi denis.bivol,

Congratulations on receiving an offer!

If you haven't had the opportunity already, I would recommend visiting all of your university choices to get a better feel for each and to ask the departments any questions you may have. With regards to Royal Holloway, our Computer Science (Software Engineering) course is accredited by the BCS, The Charted Institute for IT and the European Quality Assurance Network for Informatics Education (EQANIE) so you can be sure that you are working in a highly respected department.

Our graduates go on to do a number of things, but we've had recent graduates work at Amazon, Apple, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft and many other institutions. In addition to the Computer Science department, our Careers Service is available to help you prepare for internships, interviews and working on your CV as you get ready to enter the workforce.

I'm stuck in basically the same situation (just different cs degrees at rhul and Brunel); what did you choose?
