I think the Junxion is wicked I have lived their for two years and its the best location. You get all maintenance work sorted out for you quicker than if you live in a house and I loved being able to roll out of bed 10 minues before lectures coz uni is just across the road. Where else in Lincoln do u get that?

How about living somewhere that won't fall apart after 4 weeks so maintenance is not required?

I live a mile away so it takes me ~15-20mins to walk in. So I lose 20 minutes of sleep in a morning but at least I'm not paying to live in a boxroom

So, do any first years actually live here?

Its a mix of all years, although most of the 2nd and 3rd years i know who are staying there have booked apartments in groups, so 1st years will usually just have other 1st years in their apartment too

Ok.

I'm narrowing it down between The Junxion and The Pavillions. Anyone have any ideas which is better? I've heard a few bad things about The Pavillions regarding building work?

I'm not too fussed about living in the Student Village, i'm 22 years old so old(ish) for a first year, but still young enough to make new friends and go out and have fun.

2 mates in the apartments below me are 22, and they got on fine with everyone in the student village, theres even a 30year old doddering about somewhere!

The Pavillions and the Junxion are exactly the same, owned and built by the same people, only the Junxion is older, but in a better location at the front of the uni. There is building work behind the Pavillions at the mo, they are building a hotel (due to be finished in August) and a new student village (Finish next year??), but couldnt tell you what the noise is like!

Didn't think it was more student accomodation as Lincoln is already saturated, I heard it was more offices. The Junxion has a better central location over the Pavilions, and I think some of the common areas have a better layout. Most people complain about the Pavilions (well some of the older current students) because we had to live in that cardboard box whilst they were still building it. Woken up before 8am every day by building work including saturdays!

the worst thing is having your bedroom facing the courtyard in the centre, rubbish view and noisy at night.

The Junxion was built as a temporary development about 10 years ago aparently, and changes on the design during the build have "caused unpreventable strain on the building". The building is supposed to be demolished in the next few years, just leaving the ground floor shops. The buildings behind Pavillions are supposed to be a replacement for the Junxion, as far as im aware anyways

ahhh the good old "junxion is collapsing" rumor, heard that 3 years ago good to see it's still going strong. The way the structure is built it will be very difficult to remove parts without closing the whole thing. They'll keep it going as long as they can due to the location.

They'll keep the building up for at least the lifespan of the building even if it means propping it up.

I see The Pavillions offer car parking, does anyone know how much it costs?

Heh, it wasn't. It's only been here about five years, before this it was a bus terminal I think. The walls are really thin, at least the halls on campus have brick walls instead of cardboard I can hear my flatmate snoring as if we were sharing a bed

No accomodation in lincoln apart from the odd shared house offers car parking (apart from student village which is rumored to be around £600 for the year for a permit). The only advantage the Pavilions has over other developments is it is still surrounded in wasteland so you can just dump your car and hope the landowner doesn't block you in. Parking on the pavements next to the Pavilions will get you ticketed. The parking attendant will often go round because he knows it's a good money earner.

Looking at some older maps there was some sort of warehousing there before. If you go to http://local.live.com and search for lincoln, it has Aerial photos of the site before the library and architecture building were started, so that's at least ~2003

just do what my mate does over the main road from morrisons there is a little street that you can generally park down. you can see the little road from the main road so unlikely to get broken into or anything like that.

Easy

I'm starting at Lincoln in September, I applied here as my first accomodation choice, as the tour they did made it look quite nice compared to the student village accomodation, which was quite mouldy and degraded (eg - paint peeling off walls, foam sticking through the chairs, etc)

Reading this topic has worried me somewhat, and is making me regret my choice, its probably too late to switch now, so am I really going to suffer there? My only real standards are livability and availability of similar situation people to meet.

What are you worrying about the most?

The Junxion does look nice, and THERE will be first years here too. I'm sure you won't lack a social life. I guess it won't be a lively as the village but who knows. It depends on what kind of person you are. From looking at other forums, there are a lot of first years that have requested 'The Junxion/Pavilions' as their first choice rather than the village, possible because of the same reason as you (it looks nice) :-D Don't worry, have fun! And I may well possibly see you there!!!

It's a mix of 1st, 2nd and 3rd years. Spent a wonderful year in the student village and now fancy a room in the same kind of environment, hence the junxion. Slightly more expensive and thinner walls, but i cant wait to get my mitts on the plasma tele or the ablility to use a dishwasher!

Reply 78

You're all blinded by the fancy advertising and marketing spiel.

The "plasma telly" isn't that great, actually it's a pretty woeful abomination that they've obviously bought in bulk. Cheap and cheerful.

The walls seriously are paper thin and if your room faces the courtyard, don't expect to get any sleep as the noise is horrendous when people are coming back after a night out.

It's basic student accommodation, nothing more, nothing less, but very, very expensive.

First year: Live in courts, if you can't get in there, The Junxion/Pavillions are suitable alternatives
2nd and 3rd year: Get a house, no question about it.

i prefer the whole living together thing and think junxion is really good and pavilions are too, i have stay over night at both, and never had a problem with noise... albeit we was drunk
