The Student Room Group

Bristol VS Edinburgh VS Leeds VS Surrey VS Warwick

I've finally heard back from my last uni after submitting my applications for Masters in October! I honestly didn't think I was likely to be offered a place anywhere, so I didn't really have my hopes on a particular one - only now I have received offers to study from all 5!

University of Bristol - MSc Innovation & Entrepreneurship
University of Edinburgh - MSc Entrepreneurship & Innovation
University of Leeds - MSc Enterprise & Entrepreneurship
University of Surrey - MSc Entrepreneurship
University of Warwick - MSc Innovation & Entrepreneurship

I am just coming to the end of a Business Management with Entrepreneurship BSc and want to open and run my own businesses in the future. I am looking for a masters course that not only helps me to specialise in entreprise/innovation but, more importantly, a university that has excellent support and facilities for helping students get their ventures off the ground (i.e access to business funding, start-up support, networking, business mentoring, etc).

I'd love to hear from anyone who has any knowledge or experience of these universities or courses, particularly anyone that has completed one of the masters I have been offered a place on, as I am struggling to decide which offer to accept.

Hi @TiggerTash,

Congrats on getting offers from all these universities! Great to hear you are considering Surrey as one of your options for postgrad study. While I don't have personal experience of the MSc in Entrepreneurship, I do have a couple tips for comparing universities.

I would recommend looking at the modules offered in each course, and comparing them to see which interests you more. You can find a list of the modules on the MSc Entrepreneurship course page on our website, here. If you click on the modules (which are underlined) you'll be taken to a page describing that module  When doing this, it is useful to think of how these modules would help prepare you to achieve your ultimate goal of setting up your own successful business

Have you visited all of the universities? If not, I would suggest having a tour around campus and exploring the local area to make sure you’d be happy to live in whichever place you intend to study at. We run weekly campus tours on Wednesdays which leave Senate House at 1pm and last about an hour. If you can’t make a campus tour, you’re free to come do a self-guided tour. More info on those options here. In addition to that, if you’d like to speak to a member of the teaching team on the course then that can usually be arranged (depending on the academic’s availability). If you contact the Admissions team they’ll be able to put you in touch with an academic who will be happy to answer any questions you have about the course. Their email address is [email protected].

Another plus of studying at Surrey is that we provide loads of support to student entrepreneurs, including a dedicated space from which you can run a business during your studies, access to Surrey's crowdfunding platform, access to the Social Enterprise Fund, and the chance to win a Student Entrepreneur in Residence scholarship. We are also a member of SETsquared, which supports new businesses. More on all of that here. Our Careers & Employability team also host various employer-led workshops and guest speaker events throughout the year. These provide a great opportunity to network and get advice from people who have been in your position.

If you’ve got any questions about life at uni, the facilities, Students’ Union, and Guildford in general then feel free to ask I was an undergrad student at Surrey from 2012-2015

Hope this helps!

All the best,
Ashley

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your response. I've done quite a lot of digging for info for all the courses I've been offered; looked at course modules, entrepreneur support, general university facilities, etc, and I have been to see Surrey, Warwick and Bristol in person. I'm just finding it difficult to decide because what seems amazing about one university seems bad at another - there is no conclusive choice for me. I was just hoping I could find some students who either are currently studying one of the courses or have studied one in the past, to maybe give me a better real life picture, as obviously establishments only put the best photos and stats online and this doesn't always depict it right.

The things I'm most interested in finding out about is whether the start-up support is actually worthwhile; all of my choices have forms of business incubators, mentoring, crowdfunding platforms, entrepreneur support, etc but I've no idea whether these are actually used by students (or useful) and there are no stats on whether start-ups are actually created (and successful) through these services.

Hey @TiggerTash,

Great to hear you've done loads of research already! I completely get what you mean about wanting to hear from people who have actually done the courses you're interested in - it's always good to hear first-hand opinions from students! Hopefully some students will spot your post and give their insights

In terms of the business start-ups, I personally don't have any stats as it's not in my remit, but if you get in contact with the Enterprise team they might be able to help. Their email address is [email protected].

All the best,
Ashley
