'Critical theories' are ideas about literature and language that don't accept the conventional views of these subjects. These approaches are derived from views that are critical of the way society is organised - like Marxism and feminism for example. When they look at language and literature they analyse the social context that produced the writing and language and ask how these things support or challenge the status quo.
