Southerner in Sheffield

 I'm from good old boring Berkshire, have an offer from Sheffield and if I get an offer from Sussex I'll be deciding between the two. At the moment I'm thinking the course at Sheffield (ecology) probably suits me more but I'm slightly apprehensive about living in the north.. as pathetic as that sounds! But I have the kind of accent that even southerners make fun of for being 'posh' :s-smilie: I don't know how I'd fare up there!

Does anyone having any opinions? Also what do you think of Sheffield uni vs. Sussex although I realise posting in here may give some biased answers!

Hey I'm a southerner at Sheffield uni...there are loads of us! Really don't let the accent thing deter you - like all uni's there are people here from all over the world with all kinds of accents, American, Chinese, Australian to name but a few. As for Sheffield vs Sussex, they are both good uni's. Sussex is a campus uni isn't it? Sheffield Uni is in the centre of the city, so defferent university experience. If I was you I'd look into whether you would rather have a city or campus uni than the accent!

I'm the only southerner in my flat - they all call me posh but it's all friendly banter  And there's loads around

Im a bit nervous too. Even my mates at my school (which is private) make fun of my accent.

No one cares. Really, really.
University is so diverse hearing a wide range of accents is just the norm.

yah, im from essex and they (just about) accept me :p:
I know more southerners than northerners at uni. FACT.
Not a problem at all. As said above, the city/campus decision should be more important...

Your worried about being a southerner?

I'm thinking of Sheffield for PG and I'm worried about being too much of a northener (Liverpool) :p:
sleepy_person!
as pathetic as that sounds!

You've said it all really.
Full of Southerners, more than Northerners. I get laughed at for being from Yorkshire, though my simple reply is "if you hate the place then fook off home". Nobody really cares, the odd bit of banter like that but nothing silly.
There are way more southeners than northeners here, I get teased for my accent (I am NOT a liverpudlian, I come from Stoke!) but the southerners are really common. Other than me, there is only 3 other girls on my corridor who are northern, and only 1 sounds it and we love it!
Seriously, dont let a petty thing like that stop you from going to the university of your choice!

Just don't be like the person who actually left and went home because it was 'too cold'. I still can't believe that one.

Lol, my mum wouldn't let me go back to sheffield after christmas before buying a new warm coat as "its so cold up there!"...I did try and point out its only about and hour and a half north of where we live, not the arctic...but no
I'm a southerner and am quite looking forward to living up north when I come to Sheffield in September  To me, people seem a lot more laid back and genuine up there than they tend to be round these parts.

Definitely. I'm a Southerner and I can't wait to come up North. There are so many snobs here. Yer loadsa people say Northerners are, on the whole, more friendlier etc.

I'm not bothered by accents..though it's a shame that there seems to be more Southerners! I love Northen accents...

...mmm...which you would use cutlery to eat which is also what Sheffield is famous for, according to the 'Welcome to Sheffield' sign as you drive into the city! The endless positives!
