Perhaps underrated in the English footballing world for obvious reasons?
Sure they were not glamorous. But, I look at that team and there is just some absolute quality, a team today that can probably be competitive if they hit modern athletic standards. Formed with a spine of players that won 3 back to back European Cups with Bayern.
Their football was so pragmatic too. They could sit and absorb pressure, and when they countered they had a talisman up top in Muller who never seemed to miss.
Maier, Beckenbauer, Schwarzenbeck, Breitner, the Bayern bunch at the heart of the defence. The depth of the squad was so good that Heynckes was a bench player and Netzer only got 21 minutes in the entire tournament.
Considering they beat a team with Cruyff, Neeskens and Rep... they were pretty good. Never understand why the Dutch went into a World Cup final thinking that they were going to walk it.

I don’t think the team is that underrated. I think the legacy of most historic teams is largely based on the legacy of the players within the team. Beckenbauer is the greatest defender of all time, Muller & Breitner are all time greats and Vogts, Maier, Schwarzenback & Overath are legends in their own right. That Dutch team is leaking with legends too.
