Contacting aliens

Is actively seeking out alien civilizations a risk?

If we detect the existence of an alien civilization, should we make contact or avoid it completely?

I am of the opinion we should probably avoid seeking contact with intelligent alien species. This is because, if there are indeed alien civilizations out there, we simply have no idea if we could trust them. There's no guarantee they won't be hostile, and that in itself (considering the potentially disastrous consequences) is reason enough to be extremely cautious.

Think about it. We have absolutely no idea what's out there or how dangerous our galaxy could be. We've been broadcasting our existence for decades and our electromagnetic signals are travelling further out into a vast, unexplored void we know very little about. That in itself is scary. We have no clue who or what could hear us.

We're blindly shouting out into the cold, empty darkness - so what the hell do we do if something shouts back?
