She’s making a stupid mistake, how can I say this? watch

One of my friends has decided to try and move to the States to live with a guy she has only spent a week with in person. I feel like everyone is going along with this nonsense and I’m the only one who thinks it is ridiculous. I even said so at the beginning when they were talking and embarking on this long distance online romance.

She met this person when on holiday with a then boyfriend, and kept in touch. They have only known long distance, and even the week they spent together was during the holidays, so wasn’t like the reality will be.

I think someone needs to get her to wake up and realise it’s not a good idea to throw away everything she knows or holds dear for an unremarkable person halfway across the world. He could also be a scammer, who knows?

I’m also worried she’ll get engaged to try and get a K-1 Visa. How can I be supportive yet hey her to realise she’s potentially effing up her life? Or should I just let it go?

Let her go, people hate being told they are wrong and she will only resent you and strain your friendship. If it is a mistake, its best she learns about it first hand.

Her chances of actually getting the visa are pretty slim. US Immigration are really cracking down on green card marriages and residency visas are not easily granted, even with someone willing to employ you!

Best just to be supportive and let it work itself out.

I mean I hope so, but what if she turns around and resents me/other friends for not bringing her to her senses?

If she resents you even after you've tried, it's on her. She's being immature if she's trying to shift the blame onto you for her mistake.

Voice your opinion but in a rational way. Let her get on with it, she's got to make her own mistakes.

There’s added complexity because we were supposed to rent somewhere together before she decided this. So concerns from me could be spun as me being salty because of that.

Let her live her life. She's not going to ruin everything, she can always get a flight home, she can always get a divorce (should they get married), she can always find a new job. Nothing about this is irreversible.
