I've always thought there were 4 atoms in a unit cell of substances with FCC structure but I came across an electrolysis problem (the full problem probably not necessary for this post) which was talking about a gold thin film deposited on a a square piece of mica having dimension a=1 cm and the gold film forms an ideal 100 surface structure.

Then the solution says

There are two Au atoms per surface unit cell: the atoms in the corners belong to four unit cells

What does it mean by surface unit cell and is it not the same thing?
