    My grandmother always wore a 'house-coat'. A cotton short sleeved 'coat' that snapped up the front.

    A dressing gown is nightwear. A house coat was generally worn by housewives during the day to protect clothing from being spoiled by housework. Typically very popular until the 60s ish although some older people still wear them.
