watch a video on how the clutch works and that may help you understand the process more, when you know what happens when you put the clutch down.
gears in a car are not the same as gears on a bike. a bike has spiked cogs which a chain fits in. in a car they are two interlocking disks that separate when you put the clutch down and re-interlock as the car is put into a gear and the clutch is released (in layman's terms as I was explained)

Before you start putting gas on, learn how to pull away JUST using the clutch. Get a feel for when the clutch engages. It'll make you much more confident and then you can start putting the gas on.
Practice this in an empty carpark - then when you are comfortable with gas, go out on the roads.
