Consider the molar ratios. It is a 1:3.5 ratio producing a gas and a liquid in a 2:3 ratio. Therefore 100cm3 of ethane reacts with 350cm3 of oxygen. We had 400cm3 of oxygen at the start therefore 400-350= 50cm3. We are only looking for the volume of gas produced therefore we only look at the 2CO2 produced. The ratio is 13.5):2:3. Therefore if 100cm3 of ethane reacted we get 200cm3 of CO2. Finally add the two volumes up 200+50 to give 250cm3.

    Hope that helped.
