I just thought I'd dedicate this thread to the remarkable non-unheard-of norms in non-Windows OS' (mainly Linux)

Experts have especially discovered the usefulness of your OS not restarting itself and losing all your work while you're gone.

Yeah. It just happened to me........ Again.

This is despite me having paused Windows updates via the Official means (Settings > Update & Security > Advanced Options > Pause Stupid Updates). (For those who didn't know of that feature, I'd suggest enabling it)

Looking into it, it was because VirtualBox wanted to finish updating itself. Linux updates have never auto-restarted my PC while I have been gone. Experts suggest this is by design because only Microsoft likes pissed off users.

I wonder if at their offices, their own employees chat about how much they hate Windows.

Please hate on Windows 10 and Microsoft below.

I suspect Kaspersky was responsible for the auto-update. There really should be a single foolproof way to block all auto updates. But screw common sense.

It's the dumbest idea Microsoft has implemented since Windows 8. Sikk track record.

While I can appreciate that Windows can be a pain in the arse sometimes (although I've personally never experienced restarts in the middle of working) you should be saving your work periodically. This could have easily been a power cut and Linux wouldn't save you then. While Windows might be at fault this time (if you weren't there you don't actually know, since you later think it was Kaspersky) it's still partly your fault that you lost work if you weren't saving it.

If all you want is a thread to bash (not a Linux joke) Windows in then I can't say I have much sympathy if I'm brutally honest.

    1) True. But I rarely have power cuts. I would buy a UPS but need to save money

    2) I checked Event Viewer. The restart was for VirtualBox but it doesn't specify it was actually VirtualBox which initiated the restart. I suspect Kaspersky because it was set in its settings to install updates automatically; the Event Viewer doesn't suggest it was Kaspersky at all. I have disabled the auto updates in Kaspersky. I can't recall VirtualBox installing its own updates at all. Either way, the one at fault is Microsoft for implementing auto restarts after updates. They are not needed. If someone gets hacked because they have not restarted their machine to finish installing updates 1) it's their fault 2) not as troublesome as peoples machines always restarting when they're away. My computer is not a puppy I always need to be monitoring to ensure it does not act up

    3) Actually it was more of a post to find other peoples experiences. The last sentence calling for people to bash Windows was more to vent my frustration. So you could say both.

    4) You cannot save the exact 'state' of tabs. I may be in the middle of a long post or even a short post with ideas in a forum or site. TSR doesn't always auto save my posts and some sites don't save at all. It would be impractical to save every post I am working on in a word document as I am typing it up. I switch threads a lot.

I was also hoping someone might know a way to block restarts that I have not heard of. But the chances of that here are probably slim.
