I’ve applied to study history, and have offers from King’s, Royal Holloway, SOAS and Queen Mary’s. Have any of you any experience with the history courses of these universities, and how was the experience there for you?

Not at any of those particularly. But you're welcome to ask me about studying history at uni in general.

That would be excellent, thank you. How did you find it?

    Hi meme_machine,

I'm a recent History graduate and I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying at Royal Holloway. I found that the first year set a great foundation of academic skills and support, but also opened up many opportunities to study a range of topics that I had never focused on during school.

I found the teaching varied and exciting. There’s a mixture of seminar groups and lectures which really gives you the chance to discuss ideas and also get support from your peers if you’re struggling with a particular topic.

Both the department and the history society organised a number of events, varying from public lectures, guest speakers, to social events – the annual History Society Dinner was a real highlight for me.

In the second and third year you have the opportunity to focus on something you find interesting. Both the independent research project in second year and your final undergraduate dissertation give you the chance to independently research, plan and write something you will feel proud of at the end. The department are extremely supportive and will be there to give you inspiration too!

I had a wonderful time studying History at Royal Holloway. The skills and knowledge you gain will remain with you throughout your future careers.

Have you had a chance to visit the campus yet?
