    Hi,

For music A level, there's a coursework on free composition, which students can compose anything they like. I was thinking to write a piece for the string quartet, but I'm wondering, does it count as cheating if I pay a professional composer to write a piece for a solo instrument, then I write the parts for the other three instruments based on the melody line for the solo instrument?

    Thanks

Yes it is. You should be composing the whole thing. The melody is a major part of a piece of music, so paying someone else to do it is cheating.
