# Maths gcse question watch

1. How would you rearrange this? To make x the subject.
y = x+5 over 2x-2?
2. y(2x-2)=x+5

2xy-2y=x+5

2xy-2y-5=x
3. (Original post by Patpsbl)
y(2x-2)=x+5

2xy-2y=x+5

2xy-2y-5=x
How did you get this?
4. y(2x-2)=x+5

2xy-2y=x+5 (expand brackets)

2xy-x=2y+5 (add 2y and subtract x from both sides)

x(2y-1)=2y+5 (factorise out x)

x=2y+5 over 2y-1 (divide by 2y+1)
5. (Original post by aesthete1)
(divide by 2y+1)
sorry should say divide by 2y-1
6. (Original post by aesthete1)
sorry should say divide by 2y-1
Thanks but where did you get the y(2x-2) = x+5

multiply both sides by 2x-2

How would you rearrange this? To make x the subject.
y = x+5 over 2x-2?
y = (x+5)/(2x-2)

multiply both sides by (2x-2):

y(2x-2) = x+5

expand:

2xy-2y = x+5

rearrange:

2xy-x = 2y+5

factorise left hand side:

x(2y-1) = 2y+5

divide both sides by (2y-1):

x = (2y+5)/(2y-1)

y(2x-2)=x+5

2xy-2y=x+5

2xy-2y-5=x
This is wrong.
10. (Original post by aesthete1)
multiply both sides by 2x-2
Oh I get it now thank you.

This is wrong.
probably, I haven't done algebra in 2 years
