    That diagram is a horribly confusing use of terminology. Cab I ask which text book this is taken from?

    The battery produces an e.m.f. and is a source of electrical energy. The question wants us to interpret the battery as a generator. However, in physics and electrical engineering, 'generator' has a specific meaning as an electro-mechanical device.

    The resistor converts electric current to heat. The question wants you to think of the resistor as a receiver.
