    today if you wear one on the streets everyone will be looking at you like some weirdo....

    It was probably deemed to be "old fashioned" after a certain point.

    The bicorne, itself descended from the tricorne, was superseded as more practical by the shako for rank and file troops early in the nineteenth century, though officers commonly continued to wear it for another hundred years, and you can still see it worn (in the form of a cocked hat with feathers) in full dress uniforms of some institutions (like the Academie Francaise, the carabinieri in Italy, the Spanish Riding School and the Lords Commissioners in parliament at Westminster on state occasions).

    It was never widely used outside diplomacy, armies and navies, though the shako became the top hat for civilian use, of course.

    Not many hats are worn by men these days anyway.
