    What is this?/I'm confused
Hi there. If you're confused as to what is going on here then you are probably new to this section of TSR. This is a Model House of Commons, a forum where we emulate the structure of the Real Life House of Commons as an excuse to debate politics.

If you are seeing this and you want to get involved in the debate, please feel free. You do not need to join a party, get approval or join any group to get stuck in right away. If you enjoy it and you do want to join a party then you can do so here. If you have any questions or need any help please message me. I am the current speaker of the house and part of my role involves offering impartial advice to new members so I will always be happy to answer what questions you have. Alternatively, you can read the new members guide to get advice on a wide range of issues.

Note: Please refrain from making comments about how we spend our free time. It is our free time to spend.

M466 - Northern Powerhouse Motion 2018, TSR Libertarian partyThis House believes that the Government should do more to improve the prosperity of the North of England.

The Northern Powerhouse Partnership think tank recently released a report expressing its concerns over the still significant north-south gap. We urge the government to listen to and implement effectively the recommendations put forward by the report, which include giving urgent attention to improving the performance and aspiration of the North's schools and the quality of adult skills, along with better transport and broadband provision and more ambitious local decision making.

Poorly performing schools appear to be the most pressing issue however, with Ofsted's annual in December expressing serious concerns. In order to address this particular issue, as well as suggesting an investment of £300m, the report recommends that the government should:
    - Improve secondary schools to bring the proportion of good and outstanding schools up to the national average
    - Raise attainment in English and maths at age 16 to at least the national average
    - Aim to retain graduates and ultimately be a net importer of graduates, particularly in the areas of science and technology

A hearty aye; the north has always lagged behind the south and it's time that changed. Infrastructure is still quite an issue, with many rural bus services being cut (including the one that runs through my home village) and broadband speed/fibre-optic broadband coverage being areas where advances are needed.

It's time for the North-South divide to close.

Abstain. The Government does recognise the problems with the North-South divide and intend to implement measures to close this gap. The Education Secretary has set his plans for the Education brief of which you'll see very soon and we also recognise concerns over infrastructure and transport.

Why abstain if you agree with the motion?

I will be voting in favour of this. I strongly believe in the suggestions of the motion but would extend on them with my own suggestion: more local democracy. In particular, I believe local communities should have greater control over taxation and regulaton in their areas; such a change to our political system would incentivise compeition between regions and encourage the North to become more competitive.

Aye, ending the legendary north South divide will do good to the entire country. While this does not do much on its own, confidence from all sides will show that there are people here who’d like change in these areas. If the government is introducing measures regarding this, so be it but this shouldn’t detract from support for this ( thanks to the Liber member who wrote this btw)

Thank you for recognising the urgent investment that the North needs - hopefully our government policies will continue to drive investment in the North and help us overtake those damn southerners

I agree with the intent but not the suggested application.

May I ask what issues you have with the suggested application?

Aye as it is a motion however these measures do not go far enough.

Rest assured that the north do have an ally that fights for them both in the party and government.

Interesting that the only actual policy recommended by this motion is to increase immigration and all the normal 'patriots' are supporting it.

I feel like it skirts the issue. Let's be honest here - why is the North struggling? It's infrastructure is poor and it doesn't have enough attracting business. It is suffering from a brain drain - i.e. the majority of students at my Uni head to the south after graduating.

So we need to stimulate investment and growth which isn't going to happen with just an education package - all that will do is drive more people to head to the south. We need to be working on things like expanding superfast broadband, investing in SMEs and making sure the transportation infrastructure is there to support the growth of business and enterprise. The Northern Powerhouse is about more than a poorly thought out education investment package from a party that I thought seeked a smaller government not a larger one.

Aye, the North's success will benefit all of us, infrastructure and education must be improved to stop the divide between the north and south
