How are fold mountains created???!

Please ensure answers aren't full of degree level terms.

Are fold mountains the accretionary wedges that form with the compression of the sediment layers in the geosyncline or are fold mountains formed when the continental crust undergoes crustal shortening ( thus it is not the sediment, but the crust itself that forms that buckles and is uplifted to form the fold mountains)
