The HDI works by how close to 1 a country is. For example, Norway currently has a value of 0.949 therefore it has a high HDI. On the other hand, Malawi is currently on 0.18 which means that it has low living standards.
I think it is a good measure of living standards because it takes account of life expectancy, education and per income capita indicators which means that the measurement is more likelier to be accurate.
