Best abroad MBA courses?

Hi everyone,

I am currently studying an MA and I’ve been thinking about studying for an MBA perhaps in the next five years.

I am adamant about going abroad, and I want to know where there are the best MBA courses. I have briefly looked at Columbia and HKU, but want to know if anyone who has been in this position has any advice or insight.

Also, is it still worth having an MBA in this day and age?

Get a couple years of work experience, ideally showing an upward track record, then look at this again. 'Best' is subjective as it will depend on your career goals, budget, location and the factors which are important to you. In very general terms the 'top' unis will have the 'top' MBAs so consider Ivy League and Oxbridge but don't discount others. Consider whether a specialist course is better for you (my MBA was in Oil and Gas Management, and isn't from one of those places). Go somewhere with accreditation (one is sufficient).

Yes.

Hi thanks for the advice. At the moment I have two years of journalism, and I’ve been heavily working towards marketing. In fact I am in a marketing role at the moment while studying my MA. Would a good few years after be sufficient preparation/experience? I wonder if marketing is an MBA concentration, but I’ll have to do more research.

AMBA-accredited courses require 3+ years of work experience so you're just about in the application zone for those. As you say, you'll have to check the course content of a few places and see what appeals to you. Some are more theoretical, whereas the US ones tend to be heavily based on real-world case studies. Most if not all MBAs will have a large amount of marketing built in so you might not need a specialism/concentration in it. Good luck with your research and your current studies.

Look at fit btw business schools and your academic/goals. You will need to decide btw 1 (Insead) or 2 year MBA. Teaching methods vary from pure case studies (Darden, HBS, IESE) to experimental group based learning (Ross, Kellogg), some are very analytical (Wharton, Booth). Generally, Kellogg is seen to have the best marketing group, reflected in profs, many marketing electives and recruiters. Also you need to think about GMAT, admissions tend to use it as a cut off, see median GMAT at each MBA. Good luck
