You must present a valid railcard (with your own photo on it) together with the discounted ticket.

If you cannot produce both, the ticket is not valid for travel and you will be treated as if you do not have a ticket - which means a penalty fare.

"Passengers always have to travel with their card after purchasing a discounted ticket. A failure to produce it, along with a ticket, has led to some shocking stories. Ticket inspectors can – and often do – make passengers buy a new full-price ticket for accidentally leaving their card at home. In some cases, these have cost hundreds of pounds, often a multiple of the original fare."

Non stop trains have barrier inspectors at both terminals.

And/or they get on at the start, and off at the end.

    (e.g. Heathrow Express)
