I am trying to work out which uni to go to. One of my options does supervisions and the other doesn't. I was wondering how important and useful people find supervisions. I am a shy person and don't do well in communicating with people, however I think supervisions may be really useful especially if I don't get the course content. What are supervisions like? Does anybody have any experiences good or bad about small group teachings and would you recommend basing a university decision on which uni offers supervisions.
    Thanks

(I am a biology student by the way)

Interesting question and I would ask a student at your proposed uni as I expect it varies massively.

In lots of circumstances they are just a first point of contact when you have an issue or concern with the department and otherwise theres no reason to see them. They also vary massively in quality plus imo some of them do not wish to be a supervisor at all they just split the lecturers up amongst the students.

It may be in some other unis supervisors have a much more hands on role in your development and welfare, but I think its a bit pot luck.

You either get a good one or you do not.

If you have special concerns then do ask that question of the department before accepting and ask to be put with someone appropriate. They are rally just academics and you may be more reliant on using uni welfare services.
