Durham or Warwick?

Sorry, that's just what people have always said to me, including the admissions people here and people I know at both Durham and Warwick. Everyone I have ever asked views Durham as the place you go if you don't get into Oxbridge! Plus all the law firms I have talked to say that they give extra credit to peopel who have got degrees from one of those three, so I took that to mean that Durham was better regarded. However, I wasn't saying that I am certain on anything, just giving my opinion.

You have a strong bias towards Law though, in which Durham excels (same applies to English and History). It's a completely different matter when you look at most other subjects.

Which is why I specified law firms. I don't see why everyone is getting at me- I was only stating my own opinion from my own experiences. Just as other people are doing, except they do it in favour of Warwick.

How well do you know them? You spent much time at either university?

I think so. I've visited Durham plenty of times.

Durham can't still claim to be solidly in the top 3 for Law. Unless you're saying that Durham's Law is better than UCL, LSE, Kings and Bristol's.

I would say that Durham is a solid top 10 uni for Law. However, I can also say the same thing for Warwick's Law. Therefore, choosing Durham over Warwick for Law and vice-versa would just be a matter of personal preference as the two said Law Schools are amongst the top in the nation.

Looking beyond the league tables, Warwick doesn't get as much access to law firms through open days and talks as Durham does, and as I obviously said in the post previous to the one you quoted, law firms seem to prefer Durham to Warwick. But anyway, this isn't about law.

Since when has this topic been about UCL, LSE etc???? We're comparing Durham and Warwick, not the rest.

Er, the op is talking about History departments, not Law.

I know but since that person questioned me, I felt obliged to answer.

Wait, wait ,wait... how do you interpret this: "Durham as the place you go if you don't get into Oxbridge! Plus all the law firms I have talked to say that they give extra credit to peopel who have got degrees from one of those three, so I took that to mean that Durham was better regarded."

Weren't you actually saying that Durham Law was next after Oxford and Cambridge's Law?

So, if Durham is next to Oxbridge, then you were in effect saying that Durham is number 3 for Law, which I do not agree with.

I would say that Durham is a solid top 10 for Law, but not top 3. But Warwick is also a solid top 10 for Law. So, choosing one over the other is just a matter of personal preference. I would go for Warwick for Law because Warwick's prestige is getting better and better. On the other hand, Durham's prestige has already peaked up and its current state is already the best it can get.

They're both good universities but Durham definitely has a better reputation.
Durham is often rated 1st for History in league tables - I know they're really flawed but its history department really is great.

The module choice is amazing, really flexible (none of the 'learning history' introduction modules boringness) and you can do non-History modules too

you can see the module choices here - www.dur.ac.uk/faculty.handbook
I've always assumed that art's courses-Durham, science and maths-Warwick. This was pretty much what most of the people I know thought as well.

Says who? You?

Says the facts. In 2011/12 out of the main UK newspapers Durham ranks - 3,5,6,8 nationally. In the same tables Warwick ranks 8,8,8,6.

Also, it is generally harder to get into Warwick than into Durham. There maybe a few courses/programs that have otherwise rules but in most courses, Warwick is harder to get into. Warwick is also very well regarded in the finance industry -- where the money is

Where did you get this info from?!?
From what I could find on global reputation, the QS world rankings appears to be the most reputable and in terms of global reputation (as ranked by 17,000 companies) Warwick ranks joint 4th and Durham ranks joint 15th in the world. Warwick has a solid global reputation but you can hardly claim 'no one' has heard of Durham.
Ultimately from the facts I would say both are fantastic but Durham is better than Warwick nationally whilst Warwick beats Durham internationally. However the differences are relatively insignificant if you consider that there are some 12,000 universities on the planet.
RE: in terms of 'Warwick being more difficult to get into'... it depends on the course but OVERALL Durham is in fact harder to get into. As of 2009/10 Warwick average UCAS points - 479. Durham - 490.
Final analysis? Both are great!
