What is the link between and element’s group number and the size of the charge formed on its positive or negative ion?

metals generally form positive ions (groups 1,2 and 3). the group number usually corresponds to the relative charge on the ion.

groups 5,6 and 7 form negative ions. 5 forms -3 ions, 6 forms -2 ions and the halogens, group 7, form -1 ions.
