4. Okay, so for A,the shortest distance is if it is directly on his way home (eg. home to school is 2.5 miles and he just happens to stop at the shop on the way past. Hopefully that makes it clearer!

B)The longest distance is gonna be if the shop is in the opposite distance to home (eg. he has to walk past school to get from home to the shop) How long would that be then?

part B is yes. part a isn't.
for part a if you look, school-->home=school-->shop +shop --> home. You have 2 of these and you want the last one so rearrange to find that.
