Hi, so I’m a 3rd year nursing student and hate the course. I started the course because of my mother and thought it would be good to take on a degree that was free and didn’t seem too hard. My passion was in history and biology as two separate subjects so obviously thought nursing has biology so it must be good. We got 7 weeks of biology per year and none in 3rd year. It’s clinical obviously but the course is disappointing and not intellectually stimulating. I hate everything about nursing from personal care to medication to socialising. So no I wouldn’t want to think about it and try again because it just gives me anxiety thinking about it. I’ve broken down twice in the past two weeks in front of nurses confessing that this is not the course for me and how much I want to quit. I just turned 21 so it’s not like I’m a mature student...... I have time to change my life. I just don’t know how to do it. I know I don’t want to work in a nursing position for 6 months because I will break down, I don’t wanna step foot into a hospital after I finish unless it’s for a sickness or someone I know. I would like to go back to uni but do I have to do a whole 3 years again? And is anyone in the same boat as me or who has left already as new graduate? Any advice on how to get into something else or what is easy to go into that involves nothing to do with nursing would be much appreciated. x

Choosing a career just because it is easy to get into is never a good idea. Surely you've learnt that from this experience?

You need to decide what it is you actually want to do, whether that involves getting some more work experience or taking a break to decide.

This is your opportunity to shape the job you have for the rest of your life. If you want a career you're going to be satisfied with then you need to put in the required effort. If your career pathway involves a degree, then yes, you will need to sit a full degree. You are very fortunate to have the opportunity to go to university twice. Most people get one shot and have to make do with the consequences.
