Mmm - he seems quite switched on to student design competitions when it comes to hyperloop

Perhaps he sees more merit in encouraging students to think about that
"Winners of the competition receive no prizes and all entrants are required to hand over rights for SpaceX to use any of their technology in the future without compensation."

Hmmm, not sure if that's standard for competitions like this but seems a bit off. Although Musk does put IP into the public domain so perhaps it's ok.

Yeah that seems a bit odd.
also when you look closely at the entries it seems like a lot of effort has gone into things that aren't really very close to doing what a hyperloop is supposed to do at all. IIRC winner ran on rubber wheels and wasn't maglev or driven by magnetic reaction.

Dunno how interested all those students would be if anyone else was organising it (Might be more of a stealth recruitment process for spacex/tesla)

    Comp II winner seems cool.

Only one UK entry in either competition, Edinburgh.

Yeah - but under the skirt it's using polyurethane drive wheels... so it's questionable if much tech for an actual hyperloop had to be developed for it.

Dunno what's wrong with UK universities really... I was just looking at something completely different a few weeks ago, unis in the Netherlands and Switzerland are building out LPWAN networks and connecting them to TTN - but apparently very little is happening at UK unis despite it being cheap enough for a hobbyist to set one up.

Back in my first job there weren't any commercial internet service providers, we had to dial up to the University of Manchester to get email and usenet. unis had the internet first. Being at the forefront, or at least participating in some desultory way of any sort of vaguely cool new technology is kinda part of what I expect unis to be there for.

I dont really like Elon that much, He has some awful cult around him that see him as some kind of god that can do no wrong and as far as the hyperloop it is too hard to actually do and it is just wasting American money (he gets plenty of funds from the govt) and investors money. It seems like you gave a somewhat smart ideas guy a lot of money and too much faith, obviously some things will stick and go well (spacex,Tesla?) and others will just be a very costly faliure (Hyperloop)
