Despite the additional cost, operators of power stations are encouraged to remove the sulfur dioxide from flue-gases. Explain why this may not be environmentally beneficial.

I can't understand why is this not beneficial to remove sulfur dioxide as otherwise, it will cause acid rain...

When removing SO2 from the flue-gases, CO2 is released. When you use limestone the equation would be CaCO3+SO2-> CaSO3+CO2.
