I was talking to my cousin the other day and he is strongly against same-sex marriage. I asked in why and he said that “I think marriage’s main purpose is to make babies, and a same-sex couple can’t do this. If marriage was only to do with love then why does it have to be recognised by the state”. I could vaguely see where he was coming from, I guess.

As some one who stands fully with the LGBTQ+ community, I completely debunked his argument by saying “should there be a law that states if one partner is knowingly and medically infertile, they shouldn’t be allowed to have a heterosexual relationship?”

I guess I just want to know other people’s views on why a same-sex couple shouldn’t get married and why some think they should have the right.

Ultimately there is no reason why they shouldn’t be able to get married. People will use their own personal agendas to come up with a whole range of reasons. All of which can be debunked, just like you have done.

My message for anyone who is against it is if you don’t want to be in a gay marriage, you don’t have to be. If you want to be straight and get married go for it. That doesn’t mean however that you should stop other people from doing it just because you don’t want to.

    Yes I completely agree!

Another dimension to this is whether places of worship should be obliged to offer marriage ceremonies to same-sex couples. To me, it’s a human rights violation if they don’t. For example, a family friend of mine who is gay went to her local gurudwara to request a marriage and they rejected her, despite our religion stating marriage is the merging of 2 genderless souls. Isn’t that just as discriminatory as someone at a supermarket kicking you out because the manager doesn’t support your life choices?

Exactly! Like those bakers who refused to make a cake for a gay couples wedding. They have absolutely no grounds for refusing to make the cake. Think about how up in arms people would be if they refused to make the cake because the couple was black. But people accept it because I guess homosexuals are the one group that can be widely discriminated against by many different religious faiths.
