    I’ve just been going over an exam paper that we did in school a couple of days ago and since then I’ve improved so I thought I’d tackle the paper again.

    I’ve done all the work and realised that I don’t actually have the answers to the questions (smart I know). So I call upon TSR to see if everyone’s getting similar answers to me. This would more than likely mean I’m right or wrong.

    So basically for part a you gotta resolve forces separately; you first isolate the 2kg block and you get T=2a, then you isolate the 5kg block and you get T=5(g-a)
    Then you equate the Ts because tension is the same on both sides of the string. When equating the Ts you will get a=7 metres per sec square.

    For part b :
    There is two parts for this question, but first you gotta know that as the 2kg moves 0.4m accelerating at rate 7ms^-2 , the 5kg block will also move 0.4 m with a=7m/s^2 so you fine the velocity of the 5kg after moving down 0.4m and you will get v=root 5.6 . Here comes part two, after the string snaps, the block undergoes gravity so now the acceleration is 9.8 instead of 7 as it will fall a further 0.6m down. And remember you have an initial velocity you found in the first part if question b . Now use suvat to find the final velocity as the block reaches the ground and it’s going to be v=4.17 m/s if im not mistaken.
