I’ve been trying to get hold of an acquaintance for the past four days and every time I rang them, I received this automated message from EE - 'the mobile phone you have called is not available'. I was then directed straight to voicemail.

Yesterday morning, I received a missed call from this person. I called them back when I woke up and they picked up, however it seemed like they were in the middle of a conversation with someone else. I felt like I was eavesdropping on a salesperson speaking to a client. It was so weird. Does anyone know what’s going on?

Assuming he wasn't just having a conversation with someone else in the room that the mic wasn't picking up, these days smartphones can answer calls while already in a call and switch between which call they want on hold (I definitely know this is doable on Android, not sure about iOS). It sounds like he accidentally answered it without realising and carried on with his previous call.
