I’m a second year at university currently living in a shared house but the people that I live with who are meant to be my friends don’t include me in anything. For example yesterday they decided to have drinks in the kitchen and only asked me if I wanted to join when I walked into the kitchen to make dinner( which was over an hour after they started). They clearly had organised this and just decided not to ask me. This is just one example of a common occurrence. It left me feeling angry and left out. Any advice on dealing with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

That does sound like a difficult situation and it can be hard to feel left out. Maybe they think you are shy and quiet so spend as much time as possible either with your door open or in common spaces. Join clubs and societies and make sure you have a life and friends outside your house as well.

They did ask you to join in when they saw you - maybe they thought you were busy and didn't want to disturb you? Do you ever reach out to them to organise get togethers?

I understand where your coming from, but they knew I was just in my room chilling. Even if I was busy it wouldn’t of hurt for them to still come and ask if I wanted to socialise with them.

Maybe turn it round and ask if they’d like to do something. It’s often coincidence that drinks happen at uni. And even invite other friends, like from your course? I had a similar situation in my final year but the two people I lived with were friends previously so I was the newbie. I made an effort but it never really worked out that we were friends so I spent a lot of time with other people! Don’t let it get you too down, it worked out quite well for me as I got more work done than i ever did in previous years!
