No I don't think they should be banned. I think assault rifles and large magazines should be banned though. Shotguns, hunting rifles should be legal. And pistols as well.
Assault rifles near enough are and the Assault Weapon Ban brought in under Clinton banned high capacity magazines however the evidence points to this having no effect on anything really, the nature of mass shootings tends to be such that slightly more frequent reloads aren't an issue, they tend to be slow affairs

You wouldn't use an AK-47 to hunt deer, you'd want a single shot scoped rifle.
Well you see, that's exactly how it works. Most states require you to have a licence that states the intended purpose of the firearm. Assault rifles in general aren't sold as defence weapons, that's not their intended purpose.
Actually the most popular rifles for hunting in America are scoped semi automatics
    (Original post by Tubbz)
OK so you ban people from buying any more guns or ammo, that doesn't address the issue with everything that is already out there.

Gun amnesty? Who's really going to cough up $1000s worth of guns/ammo because they're given the chance to.

UK and US society is incredibly different. The UK is a far more socialist nation than the US.

Death rates in UK and US in general are pretty similar for most things, bar gun crime obviously. That's just due to availability. It's fairly well known fact that a gun is more likely to kill its owner than someone else.
Another case where you're wrong (I was looking for the post you're quoting but yours will do) in that rates aren't similar, they're across the board about 50% higher in the US than the UK and most of Europe. More targeted at what you were quoting there is also the significant culture difference of gangs in America vs the UK. Gangs are more than a minor factor in the equation with gang gun homicide rates alone being almost as high as overall homicide rates in much of Europe

Personally, I believe it will save millions of lives if the guns are banned within the US (apart from the authority and farmers having them).
Doubt it, how exactly do you propose disarming all of these people with assault rifles etc. ? Half the reason most of these people have guns is to stop the government doing something like that.
Not to mention their authorities have already proven themselves thoroughly untrustworthy with guns, you can hardly blame people for wanting to keep themselves armed against them.

Death rates in general I was talking, ie lung disease, heart disease, etc. The only one that is significantly higher her head of population is gun related deaths.

As I say, 2/3 of all gun related deaths in the US are guns killing the owner, usually through suicide.

And the US suicide rate is only marginally higher than Europe (12.6 vs 11.9)

Lol. Maybe millions of lives would be saved? I understand that maybe it is too late to suddenly ban guns in the US, considering most of the population has one. But there has to be something done, clearly most people with guns within the US are not using them for the right reasons (such as security), resulting in the death of thousands each day?
" thousands each day". Come on now, calm down. Do you know that when you hear that so many people are killed by guns per year in the U.S. , that figure includes police officer shootings, suicides, accidental discharge, and yes, believe it or not, justifiable shootings.

Finally someone with sense lol. Also, what do you think would happen if you banned guns?
Well obviously, despite America’s obsession with guns, they’d all be good little boys and girls and go and hand their guns in. Then they’d sit around waiting for those with the millions of illegally possessed guns to victimise them. Then if one of those people broke into their house they’d call the police and wait patiently for fifteen minutes while an armed person threatened their family/stole their property.

I think it would turn into Civil war.

Lol guns are banned here, and my 15 year old friend has one
In America there are more guns than people, all you would be doing would be putting the lives of innocent people in danger as everyone else will still have one.
    (Original post by jesswalton888)
I understand that guns are a form of protection but the UK make do without them? Maybe it is too late for them to be banned, but surely something can be done to stop things happening like what happened in Florida.
    (Original post by jesswalton888)
No. But you can ban people from buying them. The UK and US aren't exactly dramatically different in terms of society are we? I really don't understand why you need guns? The death rate is dramatically higher in the US than the UK.. Wonder why that is??
Guns are not illegal in the UK. Semi-automatic rifles (as long as they are a .22) are legal.
There are strict laws and restrictions around the guns are present, including the type of ammunition that you are allowed to have.
The UK has one of the lowest gun homicide rates in the world.

Won't save millions, at the best, thousands.

And evidentially, the govt. clearly needs several more people to die from school shootings to consider it

My boyfriend is American and he has several guns. He wants to get a new one each year. I'm not best pleased about it, but I understand it. If they ban guns and people try to take their guns away, my boyfriend said everyone would just shoot the people trying to take their guns. You can't get rid of all the guns in America, however I think it needs to be a lot harder to get a gun and a limit on how many guns you can have. There's a gun section in their supermarkets, everywhere you go there's gun stuff. It's too much, and it needs to become less advertised, kind of like the UK.

Why didn’t I think of that?! Maybe they should also ban illegal immigration, then they wouldn’t need the ‘big, beautiful wall’

No. In general I'm not against gun control, but I don't think It'll work particularly well In the U.S. Firearms are so heavily ingrained into American culture that forcing them to forfeit their right to a gun wouldn't reduce the issue and It could very well end In open rebellion. There's also the counterargument that it’s a mental health issue. Arguably, not all people who commit these atrocities have problems with mental health and when guns are as easily accessible and widespread as they are, when those two conditions work In conjunction, the opportunity for mass shootings rises. It’s not just one issue, mental health is part of the issue, guns are part of the issue, etc.

Like I said, I don't agree with it. But it's the culture he's been brought up in. Over here, we find it crazy that people are so pro-gun. But over there, we are the crazy ones for being against guns.

It's crazy that he would even entertain the idea that if a well-trained armed police unit came to his house to take his guns that he would be able to just shoot them.

Oh believe me, I know. We've had many "discussions" about views on guns.
