my friend says my uni is for dumb people watch

My friend got into UCL and I chose Birkbeck University of London (simply because it's evening classes and I have to work full time so that I can live in London). He started making fun of me that Birkbeck is for dumb people who can't get anywhere else. I could get anywhere I wanted, I know that, I just know that it would be hard to live in London, work part time and still have enough money to visit family or do anything for fun. I really think Birkbeck is a good uni, after all it's part of University of London? Now I don't know if it was a good choice if I shouldn't have gone somewhere else and just try to balance work/study somehow, I mean others do it why couldn't I?

Birkbeck is a quality university and plays an important role for people who work full-time and still want to pursue a degree.

Ignore your friend. He's just being silly.

I liked the idea of studying in the evening, would give me time to work and still have some kind of social life, the perfect balance. But after he made comments about this uni i started having second thoughts...

    Hey don't feel bad!
The person who said that to you isn't your friend and should never say something like that to you.

Also, your friend should know that UCL isn't ranked that highly in the league tables!

Birkbeck is possibly the only... less well-established uni in London that is not for 'dumb' people. Unless all mature students are 'dumb' because they value working regular hours.

The Uni of London thing isn't a sign of a good university. You'd be shocked at just how many of its constituent members have the academic standing of a garbage heap.

I don't know why somebody would say that to a friend but okay. Don't let people dishearten you over your uni choices. Sure Ucl might be a good uni but I know a lot of people who wouldn't go there for a variety of reasons. Birbeck is better than a lot of universities in the country so if you're happy to go there, it doesn't matter what your mate thinks.

    No no no!
Don't think about what he said.
He probably just said that to you to feel 'superior' in some way as he got into UCL but probably feels inferior as he isn't exactly at Oxbridge.
He wants you to feel this way to satisfy his own hurt-ego.
    Don't let him girl!

thanks! i'm feeling so much better now, i know i shouldn't care that much about what others say but somehow it just got to me... i really want to study and work, i am a bit jealous that he gets so much money from his parents to help him with living costs and he doesn't even have to work (just works part time). jealous is a wrong word in this context but i just wish he never said that, i wouldn't even think about this right now, making myself so sad over something so stupid

employers nowadays do not only look how good you are on books. they also want to know how you manage in a working environment and your previous experience. ignore your friend, keep up the good work and don't ever let anyone let you down.
