Last year I graduated with a merit in a masters related to environmental science. I applied to do a PhD at the same university but got turned down after an interview, mainly because someone had better experience than me. The question is (I'm currently doing a European Voluntary Service project abroad) would I be better off seeing if it is possible to become a research assistant to gain the experience or alternatively keep on applying to PhDs and just hope that I can find the "right" job to get the experience I want or would I be better off trying to see if its possible to get onto the 2nd year of a masters programme in Europe or even doing an Mres in the UK. My long term goal is to become a researcher.

All those a viable options though getting another masters requires spending money so I would look for jobs and PhDs at the same time and see where you get to.
