Sorry, maybe a stupid question. My teenager was born in England (so is a (UK) citizen) though also holds an EU (Not UK) passport and we lived outside the UK for 9 of the last 19 years, returning to England about 2and a half years ago. Is he entitled to a tuition fee loan? Thanks

    Hi Newbieparent,

Your son would apply and send his original UK Birth/Adoption Certificate (long or short form) along with a Birth/Adoption Certificate Declaration Form (ADIF).

This allows us to confirm your identity if you are unable to provide us with a UK passport.

To qualify for Higher Education support as a home student, they must meet the following standard residency requirements:

    UK National

    • Must be ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the first day of the first academic year of the course and
    • be ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of the course

If he will not meet the three years residency requirements in the UK by the first day of the academic year, then he can still apply for full support under the following rules.

EU nationals and their family members have the right to reside in EU member states.

This means as a UK National you do not need to meet the UK residency criteria as long as you have been living in the EU (EEA) or Switzerland for at least 3 years and have been settled in the UK at some point in your life. You must be ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of the term of your course.

We will ask the student to provide a full breakdown of his address history for the entire 3 year period prior to the first academic year of his course.

We also require a breakdown of his residency as well as photocopies of evidence from birth in order to confirm that you were at some point in your life settled in the UK.

    Regards Rona
