Don't worry, that's not going to happen. What you need to do though is put yourself out there.

If you don't meet people on your course that you particularly like, you've got to join societies and other stuff. I know this sounds harsh, and I don't mean to, but it has to be said; don't wait for them to come to you. You have to find them.

The most important thing is not to overthink it and start worrying about it. Just relax and put yourself in situations where interaction is likely if not guaranteed.

    I second what @craigish said.

Also, most of your friends will end up being your course mates anyway. You're likely to have similar interests, and more importantly, a shared passion for your subject.

You won't be the only first-year student living in private halls, trust me.

My university rents private halls for some first years who don't meet criteria to get them a guaranteed room in our uni halls (e.g. They don't live far enough away etc) in freshers week I think I spent just as much time in the private halls as I did the uni halls because they were so close together and the private halls had less restrictions on parties and noise etc. In fact I moved into the same private halls for my second year and have some freshers next door to me and there's a pretty good social life here, I'm spending my third year in these halls again because private accommodation isn't much cheaper and I've got way too used to having my own bathroom. In short trust me you're going to be okay you'll spend a lot of time in halls even though you don't live there so don't fret!
